I am in Dubai
First time is special, but second time it's home.
I am writing this from Dubai. This is my second time here and wow it feels like home. I vividly remember the first time I got out of Sharjah airport. I saw a man in the parking lot, sitting in a sportscar, smoking. My ride was a black Lexus that glided at the speed of 130 on the buttery 8-lane highways. I looked out of the window and the city of Dubai welcomed me with twinkling lights from its sky-touching-scrapers.
This time, I landed in Abu Dhabi to jaw-droppingly beautiful view of Ferrari World. This time, my ride was an (charmingly) old Nissan pickup that drove at 140, quite a ride it was! This time, the city welcomed me back with its quiet neighborhoods and serene beaches and bustling bazaars.
So even though this trip is quite different from last time, even though I’m seeing a different side to Dubai, I’m not feeling any different. The sports cars, the wide roads and high buildings, the diversity of skin tones, nothing amazes me at all. I feel right at home.
There’s less excitement but more comfort. Less novelty but more belongingness. I don’t know what to call this feeling. The feeling of getting used to even these incredibly rare experiences. The feeling of being able to absorb all of it with ease, in a lighthearted way. I don’t know what to call it, but I love this feeling!
🤔 Makes me wonder
From all your herds, a cup or two of milk,
From all your granaries, a loaf of bread,
In all you palace, only half a bed:
Can man use more? And do you own the rest?
💭 Aphorisms
The longer it takes, the longer it stays.
The verge of possibility is most painful.
You will get it once you are ready to feel it.
Because you want it, you are it. Just need some years to uncover. All growth is mere uncovering of self.
Do not get me wrong. I am literally at home, at my cousin’s place XD. But I’m referring to the city of Dubai when I say the feeling of home. Wish I had more time to find the right words to explain it. Maybe next week :)
Until then,
Aachman
