Here's to 2025!

An attempt to carve out a simple life.

You know what’s the most exciting part of a journey? The beginning. When you’re tinkering with ideas, laying out a plan, imagining how the future is gonna unfold. In this planning phase, it’s really tempting to jot down everything you want to do and everything you wish to happen. It’s easy to get ambitious and make a complex plan.

Not this year! I want to keep 2025 as simple as possible. So this year, I won’t set a list of goals. Instead I’ll focus on how I want my day to look.

I have burned my life down
To the only things that matter
Writing every day
Sleeping and sweating

I too want to burn down my life, my day to the only things that matter — exercise, code, and writing. Everything else can wait. Everything else can rest.

Exercise

I’m pretty consistent with my workouts and my routine already covers a variety of exercises and muscle groups. But I plan to enhance it further by adding explosive and mobility workout to the mix, and dedicating full days for abs and cardiovascular exercises. Think I’ll also resume my evening runs (haven’t run in months).

I am going to build a fitness dashboard with details of my workout routine, so stay tuned for that!

Code

Ever since I quit my job, I haven’t written much code. I genuinely love the art of programming and I miss my binary dreams. So, I’m gonna do more of it in 2025.

I’ve already got a new book to write, so I’ll code a supporting application. Then there’s an open source library that I started a few months ago but haven’t touched ever since. I’ll finish it this year, and hopefully develop a production app around it as well.

If I score more projects or a job, then you’ll find me coding for a bigger part of the day :)

Writing

If exercise is for health, and code for wealth, then writing is for happiness. I don’t get to do it enough though. Yes I write this letter on Sundays, and occasional technical writing for the books/courses, but that’s really not enough. I want to write more and explore different forms of writing.

So I’ll try to write something every day in 2025. I’ll get back to writing technical articles and start working on long form essays that satisfy curiosity. I’ll write to show my work and I’ll write to journal my days. And think I’ll try to write by hand when I can — enough screen time for me!

What about other stuff?

So that’s how my typical day in 2025 is going to look like. But what about other areas of life? What about learning new skills or pursuing hobbies? What about family time or travel? Have I emptied my bucket list?

Of course not! I certainly wish to travel, and I definitely don’t want my family time to end. In fact, I have my cousin’s engagement next month, followed by a trip to Dubai in February. But this year, I just don’t want to set outcome-oriented goals. I want to build a routine that, on a regular day, allows me to do what matters the most.

There will, of course, be days when I’ll be traveling, when I’ll be reading for hours, when I’ll be wasting time. But I’ll allow myself to gently transition back to the mundane :)

I’m sorry that this isn’t one of those crispy writeups where I share ambitious goals that you can take inspiration from. It’s boring and obvious and vague. Allow me to further worsen it by saying that I do have a secret goal for this year, just one, that I’d rather keep to myself ;)

I’ll catch you in January!
